I read this book for class and absolutely hated it. However, then I read it on my own and loved it. It really all depends on the context that it is read in. It is a classic story of family with a few twists and turns, this book focuses in on family and especially the role of a father.

I struggled with the first half of the book though it was setting up characters and cultural understanding. I didn't really like it until the second half. The characters are extreme in nature but the book still has nuggets of wisdom through their experiences.

Just this minute finished. I feel it's a book I will need to digest for a while to fully appreciate. It did take me a while to get through this, it's not a quick read, but powerful.
I felt very connected to all the characters in a way which is amazing to me, that a writer could make them all appeal to you while also revealing their flaws. Each was complex and rich, even secondary characters.
It also opened a world to me, and a time era that I knew nothing about I'm sorry to say.
If you enjoy character driven books and are okay with a slow but rich story, you could enjoy this.
