The plan was simple, but it wasn't without risk. It was a "Carl plan", as Donut called it.

CARL: Holy shit, I have a glorious idea.
MORDECAI: No.
CARL: You don't know what it is yet.
MORDECAI: I don't care what it is. If it's a Carl idea, it's probably a brilliant idea that's going to get you killed.

That's the chaotic but goodhearted action I'm here for, and this book delivers!

This series continues to get better and better. One of the things I appreciate the most is how the different floors continue to build out the wider political situation as well as our understanding of each of the characters. This really is a great blend of fantastic characters, thoughtful exploration of themes, and humor. There aren't enough books that lean into the humor and that makes this series stand out. I cannot wait to read more to learn more about this world and these characters.

This was the most brain-bending and tedious of the books so far, but also my favorite one yet. The trains… oh my god 16 hours of trains and maps and lines and stops and cars and engines and conductors and engineers and creatively horrifying methods of maintaining engine heat... 😵‍💫 It’s also very creative and offers many opportunities for the party to strengthen their bonds and their instincts.

At this point we know this book is not for everyone. It’s crass, violent, gory, hilarious, brilliant, and surprisingly touching. More flashbacks slipped into the action let us in on Carl’s past. Katia grows in leaps and bounds and tons. Donut shines bright as always. Mordecai… you’ll have to read and find out!

If you’ve been thinking this series seems fun, I encourage you to dive in!

Thus far my least favorite of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series, my enjoyment of this book felt hampered by the logistics. Given how Dinniman chose to stage this "level" of the dungeon, it was difficult to understand what Carl, Donut, and Katia were up to at any given moment and how they were working to find the way down. I couldn't visualize the train tracks and stations in my head, so I think I lost much of the detail of the trials and tribulations that the crawlers had to overcome that I grasped far more clearly in previous books. There was a note at the beginning of the book to the readers to not worry about understanding the way that the tracks and lines worked, but honestly I felt like it really prevented me from comprehending the plot as fully as I wanted to.
Despite that, I still had a great time reading this one. There continue to be lots of laugh out loud moments and this book held many more intriguing glimpses of the powers that be that control the crawl. I think Dinniman is doing a great job at building the world and providing more details of Carl's fellow crawlers. We're really seeing the storyline come together and I am looking forward to diving into book 4!

This definitely picked the story back up a bit. I appreciated the deeper details and interactions with other crawlers that happens. Us vs them mentality. Bigger growth in the found family aspects as well. This level was definitely more interesting but story/details are definitely still a little overdone/drawn out.
