I began reading the Sookie Stackhouse books after I watched True Blood. I had never read Sci-Fi or Fantasy before, so I was skeptical. These books are so addicting! The characters are fun and entertaining. I highly recommend them.

I don't know what I expected. I did not love Bill in the show, still did not love him here. Oddly insta-love especially when it seems like Bill's only appealing quality is that Sookie can't hear his thoughts lol. There are also like weird plot points that are brushed over.
Bill is a vampire who fought in the Confederacy discusses Sookie's family's owning slaves,? Weird comments about Black people not being safe in the bar she works? A subplot of Sookie being molested but then Bill kills him so I guess it's solved? Sookie moves into her dead grandmother's room after her death and then promptly gets with Bill in that room? Jason, her brother, is low-key a villain the entire book but then they end the book calling each other sis and bro as if he wasn't a murder suspect who hit Sookie and still hung out with her molestor?
Bizarre.

Let's just start by saying that I do not imagine myself ever reading this book again.

I think that there are two main reasons that I didn't like this book:

1) the writing was so dumbed down and wishy-washy, worse than the Twilight series. Similarly, the story was so hokey. Sookie was so on-again off-again with Bill that it became just a bit nauseating after a while. And the reason they kept having these "breaks" were so trivial, it just doesn't happen like that in real life.

2) I saw Season 1 and part of Season 2 of True Blood on HBO. I was addicted to it initially, then eventually lost interest. The show is based on the Sookie Stackhouse series of books, so I knew what to anticipate. I am the kind of person that needs to read the book then watch the show/movie, not the other way around.

And just a side critique on the storyline: I honestly cannot comprehend how Sookie was more devastated about her cat being killed than her grandmother being murdered. This is the grandmother that raised her after her parents died! This just ties in with the cheese-factor of the book.

I appreciate how this could be a quick read for a lazy Sunday afternoon if you are in the right mood. Apparently I was not in the right mood, though. I would recommend this book for Twilight fans over the age of "tweens" but not for the more serious readers of vampire fiction.

Sadly, I do not foresee myself continuing to read the rest of the books in this series...

This was fun. I recommend it for entertaining light reading.

I won't need to reread it, but I don't feel like my time was wasted.

It's an interesting take to the world of vampires and supernatural. Can't wait to read next one.
