This book was really funny to start and I actually really enjoyed most of it. However, some of the jokes got a bit repetitive and I was bored with some of them. Otherwise, still enjoyed most of it. Very quick read!

Thank you to Edelweiss+ and Andrews McMeel Publishing for an eGalley to review!

I'm not quite sure what I expected when I picked up this book and I'm honestly not quite sure how to review what I just read. This can really only be described as the sassy answer to "Does everything have to be gay with you?" It was so incredibly goofy and absurdist to the point of it being cringe-y sometimes. It was definitely a fun read, though, that's for sure. I especially enjoyed the science section, particularly the black hole part and the statistics/charts at the end. The "How to come out" quiz really made me laugh out loud too.

Some parts could be a bit more sensitive regarding the people they reference, however, particularly when it comes to Black women (the part about enjoying Lizzo being "retracted" from what's acceptable, for instance) and customs that really belong to queer BIPOC that have been appropriated (anything regarding ballroom culture and Black queer culture in general). Just because it's all utterly ludicrous, that doesn't excuse microaggressions, no matter how small. The writing gives it a "this was written by a white gay" vibe sometimes. Other than that, it was hilarious to read these absurdist claims about some celebrities.

I'd give this book a casual read sometime if you're in the mood for a chuckle, especially if you're queer and get the inside jokes.

Y’all, I cannot begin to tell you how excited I was when I heard Nic and Jenson announce their upcoming book. I love love love Very Gay Paint, their company where they paint the very best murals but also have the funniest and most ridiculous captions. Follow them immediately if you aren’t following them already.

This book was an “inaccurate” reference for gay scholars. This book is like their account by times 75000. There’s gay explanations of history, culture, food, sports. I loved the sections on cakes in drag, reservation seekers, secret gay holidays (lolllll), and what’s in a black hole. I also loved the gay word problems. And the graphs at the end. There’s one on Meryl Streep which is perfect. Ok, now I’m just listing everything in the book lol.

This book is best read like their account, one at a time and not in one long binge. And while I was given the digital arc to review I actually am going to buy the physical book too because it’s so pretty! And I want that on my coffee table.

An absolute fun time. Follow their account and red their book. A Very Gay Book is out May 30, 2023.

Thank you NetGalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

DID NOT FINISH

I can't picture recommending this. One thing of note is that some of the stories did make me quite uncomfortable like the Van Gough and the students painting war scenes. The book was also decently white centering and it just kind of felt hard to be apart of the fun at a point.
