W....T....F.... obviously, I didn't read ALL of the spoilers for this book, so when I came up on THAT part.... it broke me completely. I was an absolute sobbing mess. I truly can't understand how people who loved the first book, didn't love this one... but that is absolutely NOT the case in my situation. We learned so much in this book and still have so much to learn in the next... I'm glad I waited to read this so I could go IMMEDIATELY into Onyx Storm. I have thankfully avoided any spoilers for this book but I am also 98% sure I know what Violets second signet is... and anyone else who's read the book should too... all you have to do is ASK. I'm completely obsessed with this entire story and I don't care what that makes anyone else think of me... I can only hope to be as badass as Violet one day and of course find my own Xaden to love me wholly and completely, as well as bond with two badass dragons? ugh. I wish it could be a reality. I love that books take me from my own reality and let me live in between their pages but I also grieve when I have to wake up from my reading daze and realize that we aren't in Navarre. I'm going to take my time with Onyx Storm just as I did Iron Flame because I'm not sure I can wait another year before another book is released.... I hope Rebecca changes her mind because there are too many amazing series out there and I don't want to forget about how THIS series makes me feel.

don't listen to the negative reviews.... if you love the characters and the story line of Fourth Wing then you will only love this book too. It's more story driven but definitely has the aspects of romance that that warms our heart (and between our legs, amiright!?) I don't think any book I read is absolutely perfect which is why I base my ratings on how books make me FEEL.. and this book made me feel EVERYTHING. I'll never get over the death of Liam and now what came at the second to last chapter... oh my heart. How else are you going to break and devour us whole Rebecca!?

Obviously this entire series is a God Tier series for me so I will take NO criticisms from anyone, please and thank you!

This book, just like the first, has some obvious flaws and fell into some poorly executed holes… and yet I couldn’t put it down. The pace and the layered complexity of the action kept me fully engaged the whole time even though there were some clunky bits. Such a fun ride, flaws be damned.

Wow! What a ride! Just like with Fourth Wing, I struggled to put this one down each time I had to stop reading. I continue to find the characters engaging and am invested in their survival. Unfortunately, I had to take a long break in the middle of reading this book due to a busy schedule, so I'm not sure if I'm deducting a star solely because of the book itself or the interruption. As with my Fourth Wing review, there will be spoilers ahead.

Does this book suffer from being a sequel? Yes. Even more so because the first was so good - this one had big shoes to fill. I did get a little tired of Violent's relentless attitude toward Xaden. He has good reason to keep certain secrets to himself. I get where he came from on many of the secrets and I felt like Violet should have understood, too. (Not that Xaden was entirely in the clear, however). I did still appreciate that, once she uncovered a secret, Violet processed it instead of immediately writing Xaden off for holding something back. She was hurt but used her "Scribe's brain" to come to a logical conclusion.

I so appreciated Yarros giving Andarna her due. What a spunky little dragon. It was obvious she was different, and I liked how Yarros built that into her descriptions of Andarna so the reader had just a little more knowledge than Violet. And the continued growth that Andarna, Tairn, and Sgaeyl's relationship experiences make them all the more loveable.

I also loved that Dain got his chance to prove himself. Is he perfect? Absolutely not. But it says a lot about a person's character when they are willing to turn their back on everything they know and stand up for what they learn is right. Every character continued to grow into their own - even the new fliers that were introduced in Fourth Wing, but brought to light in Iron Flame. I really grew to love Cat, even if she was awful in the beginning. But that is something that Yarros has done so well in both books, she writes characters that grow and change. Even Violet's mother had her moment, even if it was utterly heartbreaking.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and I cannot wait to read the next. Right now I'm afraid it may be hard, once again, to forgive Yarros for a decision. I hope it was actually necessary, because from this view, it wasn't.
