3.5/5
This collection has some truly beautiful poetry and prose and offers a raw introspection into life and humanity. There were some truly shattering lines that took my breath away, and poems that captured intense and complex emotions or psychological states. The writing is deeply personal, reflective and comfortingly conversational; it feels as though you are talking with an old friend, the collection as a whole feels homely.
From a technical standpoint, there were some brilliant concepts brought into the forefront particularly at the beginning with the line: ‘Miller Mackenzie is no one’ – This line is masterful in its effect on the reader, it’s gripping, it’s chilling, and it allows the reader to connect with the writing in a more intimate way.
There were some concepts that felt like they could have been fleshed out a little more and some poems which felt like at their very core were unfinished.
However, this is only a minor criticism of an otherwise wonderful collection.
If you enjoy modern poetry and the likes of Courtney Peppernell and Atticus this is a must-read!!
