š A Man Called Ove
šļø Frederik Backman
š 337 pages
Genre: Contemporary, Literary Fiction
Rating: 5 ā
"Death is a strange thing. People live their whole lives as if it does not exist, and yet it's often one of the greatest motivations for living. Some of us, in time, become so conscious of it that we live harder, more obstinately, with more fury. Some need its constant presence to even be aware of its antithesis. Others become so preoccupied with it that they go into the waiting room long before it has announced its arrival. We fear it, yet most of us fear more than anything that it may take someone other than ourselves."
Wow, I just finished the book, and here I am, sitting, tear-streaked and emotionally wrecked in the best way. I feel like Iāve just said goodbye to someone I knew. Someone who annoyed me at first⦠but who slowly, quietly, became unforgettable.
Ove is the kind of character who stays with you. Gruff, rigid, deeply principled and underneath it all, profoundly lonely. He believes thereās a right way to live, and he holds onto that even when the world lets him down. Heās grieving. Quietly. Constantly. And somehow, even in the heartbreak, thereās humor, hope, and so much love.
Backman doesnāt just write characters, he writes souls. The writing is tender, funny, and quietly devastating. I feel like I was part of that family, I found myself aching for Ove, laughing with him, grieving for him⦠and, honestly, grieving with him too.
This is a novel about loss, love, and whatās left behind when the person who held your world disappears. When I closed the book, it felt like I was holding something fragile. A mix of joy and sorrow that hadnāt even sunk in yet.
I canāt recommend this book enough. Itās the kind of story that hurts in the most beautiful way. Youāll cry, youāll laugh and youāll never forget A Man Called Ove.

I canāt recommend this book enough. Itās the kind of story that hurts in the most beautiful way. Youāll cry, youāll laugh and youāll never forget A Man Called Ove.
Ove is a grumpy man who likes things a very particular way. When his life derails, he decides that he's going to end it - only to be interrupted, again and again, by his ecclectic new neighbors.
Fredrick Backman understands how to make an audience feel deeply. Beartown devastated me, and now Ove both devastated me and made me laugh. This book was the perfect balance of sweet and sad. For every moment we see Ove at his lowest, having lost it all, we see his hilarious stubbornness and distate for modernity force him into helping others. He absolutely refuses to see how good of a person he is and how he cares for others, in his stubbornness but also in his grief. This book also does something I love, flipping back and forth between the present and past to establish a character's foundation. We slowly get to see how Ove became who he is at present, how he has been beaten down repeatedly but bullishly pushed back against those forces to live his life. Seeing the community Ove has forced upon him come together to support each other warmed me to my core, especially with the children.
Overall, this was such a lovely book that has every emotion in it. Backman is definitely becoming a favorite!
