Overall, a fun, simple read. Couldn’t decide between 3 and 4 stars because it had some redeeming qualities but there were some times where the writing is just not great. And sometimes that poor writing sort of yanks you out of being immersed in the story and makes you remember someone wrote this and it feels a bit like you’re reading someone’s unedited first attempt at writing.

It’s a good story but it does get cheesy, or too “perfect” where yep the cat and him become grumpy friends. Or yep the people that move into Ove’s house are just an exact copy of Ove and Sonja.

Anyway, interested to see it as a movie but as a book, it wasn’t the worst wasn’t the best.

I was finding it hard to read in the beginning because Ove just seemed so difficult. Then the writer's style is something different which I haven't come across before with many short sentences. Then as the book progressed and I realised that Ove is grieving, it all started to make sense. The process of grief defined here resonates with my experiences. I couldn't help but agree on Ove's reasons to why he stopped living but kept breathing. I finished the book and I really loved the ending. In the end I started to really like Ove. Overall it was a great book.

This book has been on my to-read list for years. When my bookclub formed about three years ago, we were between this book and Ready Player One for our first official read. RPO won out, and for whatever reason we never went back to this. It actually became kind of a joke - when we couldn't decide on a book, we'd mention it, but then go in a different direction. I was excited when found it in my Free Little Library a few months ago and finally got around to reading it as my first book of 2022.

I enjoyed this story, but I didn't *love* it. It's a simple, sweet with lots of emotional hills and valleys, but there were parts in the middle that felt redundant. I didn't find myself eager to get back to it, which is why I think it took me so long to finish. I haven't read any other Backman books, but I think I'd be up for trying another. I also heard there is a foreign film adaptation, which I'd be interested in checking out, as I think the story would lend itself to that medium well.
