dark emotional funny medium-paced

Such a beautiful and heartbreaking story of a man called Ove.

Fredrik Backman has such a special way of writing, transforming what would be a boring and mundane story about a grumpy old man into a story filled with life lessons, heartbreak, and love. I cannot recommend this book enough.

If you’ve ever wanted to read a book about a character just like Carl Fredricksen from Up and Ron Swanson from Parks and Rec, this is just that.

This is the easiest 5 stars I’ve ever given. I’ve been reading this book on the buss on the way to work, needless to say everyone probably thinks I’m crazy. One second I laugh out loud, 10mins later I’m silently crying in a corner.
Ove Is the most unlikable character at face value, but within a few chapters I fell in love with him and wished him nothing but happiness. For someone who generally only reads fantasy and horror this really took me by surprise but just shows how fantastic this book is. Could not put it down!

I started this book both laughing and hating gently on this handy, grumpy old man and his adventures in our digital society where people can’t even drive or repair a house (oops, touchée). But the more we learn about Ove’s simple life, his contagious love for his wife and the beautiful influence he has on the people around him, the more we start, surprisingly, to love him.

My heart is full, I’ve laughed and I cried and I hoped this book would not end. A must read.

Rereading for a school book club. Hit just as hard. Wonderful storytelling, cant wait to talk to my students about it.

Do any of you have a family of all time favourite characters from novels that you keep especially dear to your heart? Ove, Sonja and Parvaneh very quickly became apart of mine. Every second chapter I would have tears streaming down my face, and then I’d be laughing hard out loud in the next. SUCH a beautiful story to read, one that will stay with me for a while.
