This was definitely a unique fantasy! I was intrigued by the start, learning about the world building situation right alongside the main character who has amnesia. This was very plot-driven, you don’t get to know any of the characters aside from a few general personality traits.
It started to kind of lose me in the middle though. It has very matter-of-fact narration: I did this. Then I did this thing. Then this happened. The way that characters spoke also didn’t feel consistent. Sometimes it felt fairly modern, then it would become stiff and medieval. I listened to the audiobook, and the narrator was very good! He added emotion and accents onto the characters that wouldn’t have been there on a page, which helped keep the story more engaging.
Interestingly, the main character Corwin doesn’t feel like your typical fantasy hero. I can’t really tell if I should actually be rooting for him or not… You don’t know enough about him to really judge his character. He is one of several people with a similar goal, and aside from him being the main character of this book, you don’t particularly have a reason to want him to come out on top.
It was a quick read, and it looks like the rest of the books in the series are similar in length, but I don’t think I am invested enough in the characters or story to continue.
