This book started out well enough, despite employing my most hated of tropes, which is amnesia. We got subtle hints to a large complicated intrigue and a big screwed up family. Then the story collapsed into some big boring battles. The whole thing seemed pointless. I say pointless, because I never got the sense of what Corwin was fighting for, what's so great about Amber, what's so bad about living in Shadow, what's so terrible about Eric? No idea.
Things pick up a bit towards end, or maybe I was just relieved to have something other than battles to read about. I am such a series masochist that I may continue on with Amber despite hating this book, but I do not recommend that others follow my lead.

I was a little afraid that rereading this would be mostly nostalgic, but actually I still love it quite a lot, and not just for nostalgic reasons.
Still love this series, after all these years! Fun, imaginative, dated (such incredible overuse of the term "dig"!): It just takes me back, in the best way possible!

This book was trippy for me. I feel that the sheer likeness to hallucinations of the story arcs caused me to be flabbergasted.
But this is the first book in the series and first books are never good enough for a reader. Or maybe it is just me who is really hard to satisfy.

Well, it’s certainly a ripping yarn! Highly entertaining but perhaps not particularly good. Boy howdy does he smoke a lot of cigarettes.
