I started this at the gym this morning and just finished it a few hours later. I could stop listening. I am feeling so many emotions. Mostly anger. So many people failed her. Her father took her total body autonomy away from her and everyone around her just went along with it. There were lots of horrible things that happened to her before that but that one was the worst to me. I don’t understand how no one saw that it wasn’t right and agreed to it. I’m going to have to sit with this one for a while but I truly hope that she finds peace and happiness.

Gonna split this up between the narrative and the craft.

Craft: it’s what we’ve come to expect from ghost-written celeb bios. Simplistic writing, a good job done of making the voice sound like the celeb’s, but not well written by any stretch.

Narrative: holy crap is this a bummer. It’s really tough to read (or hear in the audiobook) what Britney went through not only during the conservatorship but during her youth. This woman needed so much help at every turn and got nothing but neglect and exploitation.

It is a tough read and if I hadn’t had Michelle Williams’ soothing voice as my guide, I wouldn’t have made it to the end.

This is an intense read in terms of content. Britney was failed at every turn by almost everyone in her life. It frequently made me angry while reading. It's a testament to her character that she's still attempting to find compassion for her parents, sister, and the other people in her life who committed terrible acts against her. I hope the writing of this was cathartic for her and that she cultivates a peaceful life from now on.

The writing style isn't flashy, but feels like a conversation, which I think is what this memoir needed. There are sections that are powerful in their starkness.
