A diverting early mystery story told in sections by three members of a gentleman’s club, to distract one of their own from speaking at the House of Lords. The confusion the fog adds to the murder (“murder?”) is fun, as is the meta story-in-a-story approach even if it doesn’t exactly come together in the end. It’s more shaggy dog joke really.

1897, three interconnected stories told at The Grill Club.
Firstly the Story of the Naval Attache as told by Lt. Ripley Sears. Who on walking home late one night in heavy for encountered dead bodies in a house.
The second, the story of Princess Zichy and the theft of a diamond necklace. Finally a story to find the murderer of those bodies.
An interesting mystery story.

Not sure if it was more clever than well plotted, but I enjoyed it regardless.

Wonderful!
Perfect from the period and full of humor too (especially the ending). Fans of Sherlock Holmes and O Henry will enjoy this one.
