Anne of Avonlea

Anne of Avonlea was nice to read because I wasn’t able to compare it to the show. The show ends at the end of the first book, whereas the second takes place when Anne is a teacher and is slightly more grown up. I like how Anne’s growth is written. She’s definitely grown into a sensible young woman but she hasn’t lost her impulsiveness or imagination and she’s still determined as ever.

I also adore how they portray Gilbert’s love/crush for Anne. It doesn’t take away from her story and she doesn’t even know about it. He is just trying to better himself so that Anne may one day - hopefully - love him. But he’s not angry or upset that she doesn’t have feelings like that for him now.

Finally, my only real problem with this book is the lack of plot. Sure, Anne does a bunch of things in this book but nothing is concrete enough to be a plot it’s mostly about Anne’s growth as a person.

I switched to a print edition!

The episodic structure of the Anne books really shines here, with a collection of sweet, funny, charming anecdotes. Davy and Ginger the Swearing Parrot are my favorites. And I must say, on this reread, I don't find Miss Lavender as romantic as I once did, though I am quite jealous of her beautiful white hair.

What a beautiful, heartwarming book.. yes there a still odd saccharine moments but they are few and the rest is filled with the joys and sorrows of growing up and moving on.
