Outstanding biography. It was long and I only wish it had been longer. Richly detailed, with lots of telling quotes not only from Lincoln but from many of the contemporary leading (and ordinary) figures of the time. Only one minor nit: the audiobook was read by the author himself, and while he has a deep and pleasing voice I feel a professional reader might have improved on his performance. A very, very good book.
I thought it was a well written book. There were sone events I feel the author skipped over, that were vital to the story of Lincoln’s life, such as his near duel with James Shields.
Lincoln’s life shows us that fallible people can go on to do marvelous things in the pursuit of justice and that gives us hope.

A moving biography of Abraham Lincoln that's still very relevant to today's world.
Lincoln was a man for his time and my favorite quote of his in this book is ‘I may walk slowly, but never backward.’ Meacham writes this as if he is giving it from a pulpit. A lot of religious tones and imaginary.
To some, Lincoln wasn’t moving fast enough to end slavery and to others he was a tyrant. But he moved this country along and forward with one mission, to unite the union.

If you ever run across someone with an incomplete understanding of Lincoln, this would be a good book to point them towards. Over the years, I’ve seen it said that Lincoln only freed the slaves to win the Civil War; Meacham’s book provides a lot of clarity into how Lincoln always felt about slavery. It also illustrates what a brilliant diplomat he was.
It’s rare that I ever feel like a 600 page book wasn’t long enough, but incredibly it did feel like some huge sections of Lincoln‘s life and presidency could’ve been covered in even more detail. This is not necessarily a criticism as Meacham does a phenomenal job in illustrating Lincoln‘s life.
I’ve always enjoyed studying American history, and in particular Lincoln in the Civil War era, yet I learned quite a few things that I had not known before. It’s exciting that a book about a man who died 160 years ago can still feel fresh, but that’s what Meacham has done here.

A detailed accounting of one of the country’s most notable figures. Meacham is detailed and thorough. My only critique is the repetition of some phrasing. Great on audio!
