Like every book I've read by Jon Meacham, this one was excellent and incredibly well researched. Highly recommend.

To be honest, this effort on Lincoln from Jon Meacham is quite simply exhilarating. As a youth, learning about Abraham Lincoln is quite simply linked to every elementary and high school social studies class you can take. While you can certainly learn about the Civil War, the Emancipation Proclamation, and Gettysburg Address through a typical public education; reading about these items in depth by Meacham puts a completely different spin on all of it.

If you wish to learn about the man, his impact on slavery, and the hardships that he suffered both professionally and politically, then this book is a must read. Be warned however — it can get very detail oriented and be a slow read in places; but the payoff is well worth it. In a word, this book is “thorough”. I learned more about Lincoln then I could have ever hoped to through any other means.

Meacham has researched his topic thoroughly, and the book has me now wishing to explore other aspects of our history. This is the second book I’ve now read by Meacham (the first being his last book on John Lewis), and both have left me extremely satisfied in the way the content was covered and how well written both books were. If you’re into Lincoln or U.S. History, this is a no brainer— read this book.

Very readable, poignant with it's evaluation of Lincoln morally and philosophically, Meacham delivers yet another excellent Presidential biography. For someone in my current mindset who was looking for a good, enjoyable, but not necessarily academic biography, it was exactly what I was looking for, though at times I did want for more detail. From reading other bios, I also think Meacham (as he tends to do) focused a bit over-zealously on Lincoln's religious beliefs, but that's a minor quibble. I look forward to reading a more thorough book over the Civil War, as well as biographies hopefully of Grant, Johnson, Douglass, and more to get an ever better understanding of this era and these events.

Deeply affecting, Jon Meacham connects Lincoln’s world and times to our own fraught days. He shows Lincoln’s triumphs and faults, his leadership and his compromises. He paints a portrait of a deeply spiritual man, with southern roots and frontier sensibilities, who rose to national prominence through his brilliance, eloquence, and determination to keep the union together.
