The main character was difficult to believe. One minute she was self loathing, the next she was steadfast, another she was Emily Dickinson’s protege and finally she would be quirky cool girl to the hunky male main character. Also the main character’s family were real jerks, and yet the main character still gave them pass after pass. I wasn’t invested enough to see how they might reconcile. In my head, I hope Emma gets the bookstore, takes all the books out, sets it on fire, gets the insurance money and moves the heck away from her toxic, soul sucking family. The nurse friend was nice. I hope she gets on her reality show.

Generally, I do love the idea of getting away to find oneself but this story left much to be desired. I was either annoyed at characters, dumbfounded by Emma’s obtuseness, or just plain disappointed by Davis’ cowardice.

Emma Rini is running her parents’ bookstore and slowly building up resentment against her parents, who seem to take her for granted, and her sister, who is focused on her first pregnancy. When her parents announce they are retiring, she impulsively decides to take a six-week vacation to a crumbling manor house where she can get in touch with her inner Emily Dickinson.

Emma obtains mixed results from her experiment, but learns a lot along the way about herself. Besides the expected love interest, there are new friends to be made and breakthroughs to be had with her family. I enjoyed this book quite a bit and appreciated the bookish themes.
