I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked this book. It's not the best, but for a childrens/YA book, it's great. I loved the climax, but not so much the falling action. If it had wrapped up a little better, this could have easily been 4 stars.

I like the idea of what you read can come to life. although it is a dangerous thing i like the idea of it. Books feel somtimes like they do come alive and so this is exciting. the storyline is great and it was a fun read !

4.5/5 ⭐️

the third person omniscient is majestic it reveals so many plot twists so beautifully and even though this is a book for 12 year olds I am ENTERTAINED AND MESMERIZED like her world building and literary devices are just !!!!!!!!

Reread it in German!

One of my all time favorite series. You MUST read this. Meggie lives with her dad, Mo. When Mo reads aloud, he reads characters out of books - the Inkworld. Unfortunately, he can't control who comes out of the Inkworld nor can he control who disappears into the Inkworld. Highly entertaining.

When I first started this book and all the way to the halfway point, I was sure this would be a 5 star read. The characters are outstanding, the plot is unique, and the atmosphere vivid - I was on this quest with these characters and fully invested. But at 548 pages (for a middle grade book!), it was just too long. The length wasn't necessary, as the characters would be captured, then escape, then be captured again, then escape, and I really struggled to read the last third of the book. If the story had been tightened up, it would be an all-time favorite. This is part of a series and I see that book 2 is 682 pages (with lower ratings than the first), so I don't think I'll continue.

The first several hundred pages of this book are actually quite depressing. Very evil characters and very little sense of hope especially for a children's book. But ultimately, I enjoyed the pay off at the end of the book which is what counts, right?
