Back in the mid-70s, for a while one would see paperbacks on the racks, "written by convicted Watergate conspirator E. Howard Hunt." I think I read one of those, but I don't remember it. Here, courtesy of a cheap Kindle edition is one of them. Steve Bentley is an accountant/private investigator. One night at a strip club, the guy sitting next to him gets beat up, but before he is dragged from the club, he drops something in Bentley's pocket; it's a miniature camera and he had been taking pictures of the stripper, Linda Lee. Bentley has the pictures developed, gets beat up, and gets involved with the stripper (crudely and immediately dropping his current girlfriend in her favor). When Lee turns up dead, Bentley is in a lot of trouble. I found the book to be fast-paced and engaging and in general well-written. A rare noir novel to be set in DC, and written just a year before Hunt was involved in the Bay of Pigs disaster, I was also surprised to see it was relatively politics-free. I won't read any more of them, but did enjoy this one.
