This has some weird elements but it is probably the best-told origin story for Catwoman yet.

+7 The second Catwoman companion story to Batman: Year One ever officially published, Catwoman: Year One is consistently better in fewer pages contained in one oversized annual issue in comparison to its predecessor - a four issue miniseries, 24 pages per issue.

The rivalry and constant bickering between Selina Kyle and the antagonist Kai was a great dynamic, with their mentors' counselling/advice a decent way to break up those encounters. Despite liking their rivalry, Kai’s initial motivation for hating Selina isn’t explained in depth - he wants to go to the sacred realm of Velek, but it isn’t explained what any of that is, and Velek isn’t a pre-established concept either. Kai does rant about wanting to shed his mortal form, but is that actually what’s going to happen or is it religious fanatic babble? Liked the connections to Batman: Year One as well, but would have loved to see Carmine Falcone get scratched up in this artstyle!

Talking about the art, it’s incredibly clean and modern. This is the definitive Catwoman origin story, but it isn’t hard to beat the original attempt.
