Took a while to get into it but absolutely loved it. The world building felt so real. The stories both nurtured and broke my heart. Will be buying the trilogy asap.

This book won the 2016 Hugo Award and was nominated for a slew of others. Science Fiction is not one of my top genres, but I did read this book somewhat obsessively. Unlike most sci fi, it's based in the earth--geology--rather than space, and I liked that. The characters are also compelling and mysterious--the interconnections between the various focus characters are not immediately obvious, although it does all come together in the end. I'm not going to go for spoilers here, but it's worth giving this one a try to see if you're drawn in as I was.

I think I maybe expected something different from this book. From all that I’d heard and read, I expected something really intense and epic, but in reality I found that this story unfolded slowly, and most of this book feels like a prequel for the next in the trilogy. Nevertheless, I found myself invested and intrigued by this world and its characters.
