Obviously, this is a classic. I have fond memories of my mom reading it to me as a kid and telling me that I could do more than I thought I could if I would just give it a try. As an adult reader (parent, aunt, children's librarian, etc.) I like this book a little less. Yes, the message is still great - try harder and reach for more than you think you can do and don't give up - but the book is tedious to read. Do we really need to list every single thing the train is carrying? Does every other engine have to be so rude? Do only good little girls and boys deserve good food and toys? And, if all the toys are going to get out of the train cars anyway to beg others for help, why can't they help push the train over the hill? Also, both the text and the illustrations are dated ("bottles" of milk, toys definitely separated by gender, and all the dolls are white).

Just a few things that ran through my mind as I read this one. Yes, I will probably still use it for story time, but I will skip a sentence or two detailing all the train's cargo and emphasize the message of perseverance and hard work.

Just because you are important or large or old it doesn't mean you are actually unable to stop and help but it really shows the need for positive thinking. It was a fun little story that shows how much of a difference you can make by not only challenging yourself but also by helping others in need.

Children's classic and self-doubt bible.

This was one of my favorite books from a very young age. It is definitely one that I will be reading to my daughter.

The Little Engine That Could by Watty Piper – A classic picture book about persistence and kindness. Happy Reading!

Our first book from Dolly Parton's Imagination Library. I forgot how long and weird it was!

I dread re-reading picture books I loved as a kid and realizing that they're racist, right-wing, or otherwise awful (Mike Mulligan is a fucking scab who would have voted for Trump against his own interests). It is so pleasing to come back to The Little Engine That Could and re-discover a beautiful story about resilience, altruism, generosity, embracing the possibility of failure, and anti-elitism.
