A childhood favorite that I just reread for the first time in years
Children's classic for a reason. A train book I don't mind reading over and over and over ...
This was the first book my daughter got from Imagination Library, and she loved it.
She, now, likes to go through it, and say “choo, choo” when she see the trains.
This book is a classic, and teaches kids that they can do more than they think with a little hard-work, persistence, and positive thinking.
I didn’t rate this book a 5, because the illustrations aren’t the prettiest. They’re not the worst I’ve seen, but they are a little old-fashioned.

I think this is one of those "not-for-me" books. My kids also found it very boring. I asked them why and they said it was because "it's just boring" - excellent critique
I found it kind of old fashioned (it is an old book). I didn't particularly like the style of the illustrations and the fact that my copy of the book has sentences overflowing onto the next page. It's a little jarring when reading aloud to have to stop to turn the page to finish a sentence. A good message but not for my kids or my kids apparently.

Incredibly old fashioned with the toys going to the children ...but still a classic : )
Another author who I enjoyed as a kid! I always had my nose in a book
Great read with a powerful message in it. Loved the old vintage drawings. Loved the easy read for children. Glad I had the change to read this book finally.
[75th anniversary, 2005] A nice update to the original, but I personally liked Dan Santat's version a little better than Loren Long's.
90th anniversary edition. This has the exact same text as the original, but new illustrations by Dan Santat. I love Santat's style, his expressive faces and the more modern appearances of the toys, particularly the dolls and the clown. (The doll with "brown eyes and brown bobbed [hair]" now also has brown skin and is dressed in tee shirt and shorts; the one with "yellow curls" wears a blue dress.)
