’Salem’s Lot is a masterclass in atmosphere. Jerusalem’s Lot itself becomes a character, steeped in dread and foreboding. The antique shop run by Barlow is one of the most memorable details, hinting at darkness before it fully unfurls.
However, the novel’s greatest strength may also be its weakness: the sheer breadth of its cast. By populating the town so fully, King creates realism, but for me, it diluted the tension. The narrative momentum sometimes stalled under the weight of side characters, making it difficult for me to stay immersed.
As a fan of vampire stories, I anticipated a sharper escalation of horror, but King’s approach is more gradual. He embeds terror into the ordinary fabric of daily life. While I admire that craft, it left me yearning for a faster bite.
Ultimately, ’Salem’s Lot is an atmospheric slow burn that rewards patience.
