FMC has an emotionally abusive and manipulative family, where she is in a caregiver role and made to feel guilty for setting boundaries and doing things for herself. // Child abuse is mentioned briefly about events from the past not directly involving the MCs // Slavery briefly touched upon of non-main characterbookedinsideout's review against another edition

Contains several scenes of consensual non-consent and toxic family issues. Would have enjoyed more if less CNC.shaipanda's review against another edition

Tessa is a really resilient heroine. She's dealing with the grief of losing her father, medical debt, a demanding job, and a family that's emotionally manipulative. You see her struggling with the latter throughout the book but as the story starts she's found a way to deal with the debt: signing up to become a blood donor to a vampire. That's how she meets our hero, Amos.
Amos is such a rarity in romance. He's such a sweet, introverted cinnamon roll. But he's also described as looking incredibly average. Tessa is almost as tall as he is. I am so TIRED of these gorgeous heroes with eight pack abs looming over the heroines, so that was really refreshing to read. Anyway, despite being a vampire with predatory urges, Amos is really respectful of Tessa. He's possessive and protective, but it never crosses the line into controlling behaviour. He actually discusses things with her and they communicate properly.
As for those predatory urges, it turns out Tessa actually likes being the focus of them because she's so tired of being in control of everything in her life. So this book does have some primal play and CNC scenes (seriously the best CNC scenes I've ever read!). It was so nice to see consent properly handled with safe words. I also loved that Tessa was curvy and still really confident in her body. The romance itself is sweet and low on conflict: every time you think there's going to be a big drama scene, the main characters just talk it through and use the power of good communication. I love it.
By the end of the book, there are some lovely cosy found family vibes that felt like a warm hug. Oh, and I really enjoyed the casual bisexual representation in this. The way Amos worried that Tessa would be disgusted at him having male lover in the past, the way that Tessa is still portrayed as bi despite only having had crushes on women before and not needing to explore it further. It felt so true to the real life bisexual experience.
This is seriously one of my top reads of 2022 and I think will quickly slide into my all-time favourites. If you're also tired of the same-old alpha heroes and big misunderstanding conflict scenes like I am, I think you'll like this.
