my favorite Dr. Seuss book, very intuitive of how we are as humans..
fast-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot

The Yooks believe bread should be eaten butter side up while the Zooks believe bread should be eaten butter side down. The Yooks and the Zooks battle on and on, each side raising the stakes until both sides stand poised to destroy one another.

I'm not a fan of this Seuss war story. I gave it 2 stars instead of just 1 because I liked the open ending that challenges readers to make up their own ending. The story itself is a conversation starter which is another reason I didn't give this book only 1 star.

It's a difficult subject and Seuss doesn't shy away from it. He gives us some powerful words to think about, but this isn't a Seuss tale I keep close to my heart.

Ambiguous ending but still germane to today's times and issues unfortunately. I read this for hrcyed read a book from my birth year prompt.

I love the imaginative world of Dr. Seuss.

This is one of the last books Dr. Seuss drew and wrote, and one can see that his drawing skills aren't what they used to be (the guy was 79 at the time, so this is not surprising). The book is a clear product of the cold war era, and especially of the doom era (ca. 1979-1985), in which the feeling of impending nuclear doom was felt the most. In 'The Butter Battle Book' we watch an arms race between two neighboring countries, whose only difference is on which side they butter their bread. Only Dr. Seuss can dream up such a trivial reason. The absurdity of the discord notwithstanding the two countries soon are about to blow everyone to smithereens with the 'Bitsy Big-Boy Boomeroo'. Uncharacteristically, the book has an open ending, as if Dr. Seuss wanted to show that an arms race involving mass destruction weapons will lead us nowhere.

Because of its clear cold war theme, 'The Butter Battle Book' has aged less well than other Dr. Seuss books, even though the nuclear threat has never left Earth since.

Dr. Seuss wrote a book about the Cold War. Who knew?

Brings back memories of childhood.
