I wanted to love this book, but the more I read the more I felt I as if I were wasting my time. I love Japanese history and this book didn't do it justice. It wasn't clear what the book was about until the end - a bunch of awful people make bad decisions. The writing was tedious and failed to convey the beauty of Japan. All of the characters were terrible people, except maybe Honda (the protagonist's sidekick). The ending was insulting. I'm not angry that it wasn't a happy ending, I'm just angry that I could have been reading better books.

This is an astonishing novel. I've not read any Japanese literature before and I was drawn to it via a lifelong fascination with Japanese culture and Buddhist philosophy in general, but I am so glad I made time for this. It has a deep and subtle quality that I've really not experienced before in any writing, anywhere. The author's ability to describe the intangible gives this novel a timeless beauty. Mishima's knack for exploring feelings and events through pathetic fallacy, and to draw the reader in to the deepest subtleties of the human condition are - in my experience - unparalleled.

Anyway, this is a beautiful, timeless and tragic love story that encompasses the difficult themes around coming of age with a real deftness and skill that will leave you speechless. Well, it did that to me. I was lost for a few moments after I finished the final chapter. Remarkable and beautiful.

Only picked this up as background info to "Runaway Horses", which I am yet to read.

I have a suspicion that the plot (dramatic, but not at all unusual – I had a vague feeling that I must have read it all before, it's very 19th century lit), is a thin excuse to display the characters and the landscapes. This is more about poetry than about message or even choices - everything rolls along so smoothly and everyone plays their parts so well there don't seem to be any choices happening. This is a beautiful tragedy, with emphasis on beautiful.

There might be also some kind of reflection happening on the history of early 20th century Japan, but I am largely missing it because of lack of background knowledge on the period.
