This was a masterpiece and I’m glad someone recommended it to me as among their favorites so I could get through my dislike of the main character though the first 1/3.

The crescendo of emotions, the vivid feeling of being human, the search and attainment(?) of purpose. I want to life my life with the unhinged zest that those two have. I also want to survive my 20s.

I had mixed feelings about Yurkio Mishima’s novel “Spring Snow.” The story felt a bit uneven in pacing and in tone. I felt like much of the book was heavy in symbolism and meaning. However, many chapters were written like a bad romance novel. The book would often pick up steam, only to come to a grinding halt for a few chapters.

I really disliked the main character, Kiyoaki, who was unbearably immature and angst ridden. Actually, none of the characters were easy to like, but I think that was the point. It takes a really great writer to make the reader compassionate towards dislikable characters. I don’t think Mishima accomplished this in “Spring Snow.”

I don’t want to make it seem like I am discounting him as a writer. I liked the overall plot and he was wonderful creating places and tension. I actually think that he created some great characters, they were just lacking a bit of depth. His writing reminded me a lot of Kazuo Ishiguro and Edith Wharton. Both have written on similar subjects and have a similar style. I feel like this book could be turned into an excellent movie, with faster pacing!

Thank you to Julie for the loan!

'I've known supreme happiness, and I'm not greedy enough to want what I have to go on forever. Every dream ends. Wouldn't it be foolish, knowing that nothing lasts forever, to insist that one has a right to do something that does?'

An imperial Japanese version of #richkidsoninstagram. Pretentious, empty and boring ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

4.5

Mishima's writing is just heavenly
