I tried. But every time I pick up this book my mood worsens and I can't get through more than 10 pages. It's not only repetitive and incredibly slow but also disgustingly misogynistic. I truly don't care what happens to any of the characters since they're either dull or absolutely unlikeable (or both).
I'm way more interested in the author than the book.

I will hate Mishima for the beautifully written romantic, yet tragic ending of this novel.

I'd read a biography of Mishima years ago but never read any of his novels, so it was enlightening from that standpoint. Found the book a bit dry for my taste while reading it, though I do find that images from it have really stuck with me.

Otroligt vackert skrivet - många delar som jag skrivit ner citat från. Själva storyn var dock lite tråkig ibland då den utspelar sig i ett land och under en tid som jag inte känner igen, vars kultur ibland var svår för mig att förstå.

Mishima is a genius. Like a strange antique he is a rare author with an instinct for life and a mind for the heavens. Yes. Joy. Yes. More Yes. Life abundant

In all honesty, this book is an intellectual’s literary trophy. A type of Eastern Ulysses in terms of accomplishment. It’s a beautiful book but I’m afraid it’s cultural nuances are lost on me. The translation is beautiful but it feels like an incredibly slow burn. The characters, the setting, the thematic arcs are all of an era and of a specific context that I had no knowledge or understanding of when I read it and much like when I first experienced post modern art, the thematic importance of the story, the descriptive nuances and subtleties of the characters completely washed over me, leaving a faint imprint of awe and absolute non-understanding.
My star rating is based on my impressions alone and less to do with the intellectual or literary merit of the actual book.
