Esther is feeling lost after her sister disappeared into the ocean a year ago, and she sets off on a journey to find out what happened to her, in the hope of putting her life back together. By the end, I quite enjoyed it, particularly once the action moved overseas, but on the whole the style was a little overwrought for my taste. It’s pretty intense with angst, has a good sense of place, and flowery language. Also, as an emetophobe, I struggled with more throwing up than one usually comes across in a book. Lots of hangovers, but also responding to strong emotions with throwing up. I definitely couldn’t watch the movie.

What I liked:
1. The theme of reclaiming one’s body and story after trauma/loss.
2. The exploration of story/myth particularly of both Tasmanian peoples and those of the Danes, and people of the Faroe Islands and how they relate to culture and identity
3. Learning more about Palawan Culture (loved the use of native names for places)
4. Learning more about Denmark and the Faroe Islands
What I didn’t like:
1. Slow moving story , very detailed, sometimes seemingly irrelevant details.
2. The protagonist seemed quite self centred which is understandable for a young woman experiencing loss but all in her world were so understanding and forgiving and caring of her needs, despite their own experiences of grief, just felt unreal.
3. Really didn’t like the love interest scenario - anyone else agree?
This one didn’t touch me the way Alice Hart did but glad I read it.

This was soooo long and soooo frustrating!!! I really didn’t like Esther and I hated the fact she had a romance with Sophus - was awkward!!!!! I almost DNF so many times but ploughed on til the end, which I’m proud of! This just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Compared to Lost Flowers, I really struggled with this one. There were some aspects I enjoyed, and I think there was potential for a really great weaving together of various stories across time. The end result, however, was laborious and repetitive. I felt there were so many bits that needed to be edited. I also found it hard to connect with the main character, which isn't always necessary, but for a book as long as this one, it became less enticing to continue on. I can absolutely see the appeal of this book; I just don't think it was for me.
