Wow, this was a good one that I was not expecting. I really got sucked into Cole’s writing style…witty and interesting philosophical sentences with a melancholy twist consistently strewn throughout that cut deep and practically left me breathless.
I was wondering if I was the only one not rooting for Alma and their relationship…But a great author wouldn’t have written her depiction by accident. As much as I hate to admit it, some of the things I disliked about Alma reminded me of myself (especially in my teens/early twenties) when I was more judgemental, close-minded, and sanctimonious (and non-coincidently, more conservative.)
This book hit so close to home; I could relate to Owen’s relationship with his Trump-supporting family members. It really makes you realize how many people are struggling with the same political dynamic of loving your parents yet hating their political views. This is the contemporary American novel that happens to have a “love” story sprinkled in.

I don’t tend to love writing about writing unless it’s nonfiction or extremely well done (think Writers and Lovers.) I wasn’t interested in the characters.

I think that this author has a lot of promise to grow into a very strong writer. I enjoyed the Louisville references in this book, although sometimes the Kentucky references felt somewhat heavy-handed. However, the self-awareness written in — an author, writing a book where he is the hero from his perspective — didn’t really resonate. Room to grow though as he is a strong writer!
