I'm starting to realize that I'm just not the ideal reader for Backman's work, and that's okay. I did not care for My Friends, though it gained some merit from Marin Ireland's audio narration. I still had high hopes for Anxious People, and I'm sad that I didn't enjoy this more. I thought this book was full of canned emotion and flat characters. The plot's pacing was redundant and at times patronizing. In both My Friends and Anxious People, I disliked the narrative style of telling a story instead of showing a story. There were some pages or moments that were genuinely nice or interesting but overall not for me I fear :(

I did not like this one. For the entire first half, I was convinced this was the most annoying book I’d ever read. It did get better… slightly. The characters are frustrating and one-dimensional. They feel like caricatures and I just didn’t care about any of them. The pacing was sooooo slow. The plot would start to pick up at points only to fall back into the most mundane of scenes. And all the moralizing… no thanks. I’d rather be shown than told, but this just felt like amateur philosophy hour. I would give this a one star, but I appreciated the twist and the few moments that hit me right in the feels. All in all, I don’t think I’d read from this author again. I know I’m in the minority here and that’s okay with me.
