The times, in fact, were not exciting. No real conflict or real life problems- Ava just freeloads, fucks who she wants, frets about that, and takes no action what so ever to improve herself in any way). I truly don't understand why Julian and Edith would like Ava in the first place, or why so many people love this book. Its "feminist" but Ava’s ramblings on female oppression are completely inconsequential- she only seems to care about feminism when it gives her an opportunity to play the victim or sound woke. And it tells you nothing about Hong Kong? It just exists in a weird, slow bubble.

Despite this featuring heavily on many “to-read” lists, I just couldn’t connect with the writing.
