A novel following Ava, a chaotic protagonist as she flits between her undefined relationship with Julian and quickly developing relationship with Edith.

With a promising idea, Exciting Times is a good debut, but didn't quite convince me of Ava's struggle to choose. More showing and not telling feels needed in really getting into Ava's mind and past. But I'm excited to see where Dolan goes from here.

Best way to describe it is a cheap knock-off of Sally Rooney. It gets plus points for being queer but loses the lot of them by the fact she only seems to fuck people who are rich while also calling herself a communist.
reflective medium-paced

“‘Everybody does that, Ava,’ she said, “You keep describing yourself as this uniquely damaged person, when a lot of it is completely normal. I think you want to feel special- which is fair, who doesn’t- but you won’t allow yourself to feel special in a good way, so you tell yourself you’re especially bad.’”

ohh i tried so hard to enjoy this book but simply couldn’t. i feel as if this is what people who criticize sally rooney’s writing think how sally writes. i truly didn’t care for any of the characters or their relationships they all just felt so one dimensional and i couldn’t tell you anything important about them. don’t get me wrong i enjoy unlikeable characters but again i couldn’t get invested in any of them. there were some really good and well written parts of the book sprinkled throughout but like… nothing amounted to anything in the end. i kept asking myself what’s the point of what is going on. again love a book with no plot but there just wasn’t any character development or complex enough characters to sustain a book with a minimal plot. i don’t think naoise is an untalented writer i just think there could’ve been more to the characters and their relationships than what was given. i think comparing this to sally rooney just does everyone a disservice. overall just underwhelmed and there were no exciting times present.
