Glad I only read this 7 months into living in Hong Kong as an English teacher. Painfully accurate (don't fully relate to the plot to be very clear), but all of the observations about HK. Need to buy and annotate my own copy. Read in 2 days.

Smart, clean, and compelling. This book pricks you in the heart then mops up the blood. Sally Rooney fans will adore this one

Two of the most unlikeable people on the planet having the most demonic situationship + a really nice woman who deserves so much better.

Unsatisfactory ending, too ambiguous for the level of crap this book put me through

It's good at being what it is. It's the same I always find in Contemporary Irish Literature, dull and largely buried emotion. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy it. It's just not exciting if that's what you're looking for. It's a drab look into an insecure woman's life surrounded by others who couldn't care any less (on paper) as per usual, there is emotion, lots of it but it's hidden. The narrator too insecure to even share much of their true feelings with the audience. It's not a fun read and it's hardly enjoyable, but it's a simple story I like.
