This was bizarre and all over the place.
The premise WAS exciting because I have also taught English to children in China.
However, the fact that the main character was living and working abroad was really ditched in the storyline.
The primary dilemma doesn't become clear until maybe the middle of the book?
Super lacking in any kind of romance which could be the reason why I didn't feel invested in any of Ava's relationships.

The first part of the book felt very pretentious, with 'intellectual' kind of writing, quite hard to follow at times especially if you're not familiar with the political themes and socio-cultural subtleties. The second part was the most enjoyable and actually likeable. The final part and especially the ending were very confusing. Still not sure what to believe about what happened at the end. Overall easy to get through, I read this in just a few evenings. Still interesting but the protagonist was at times relatable, most times annoying...
