First of all, the writing was so well done; although it took me 1/4 the way through to get comfortable because it's honestly been awhile since I have read something with this style; but also, and  I consider myself to have quite a large vocabulary,  I found myself looking up many words (yay kindle!) throughout, a large majority of which ended up merely being cultural references.

It's less of the fantasy genre I was expecting; the magic involved is stage magic and illusions, but I really enjoyed it! Even though I figured the outcome would be positive, I was still on the edge of my figurative seat with every one of her performances, especially as the book progressed. I absolutely loved the ending. (a lot of mental maneuvering)

Some people felt the characters were too perfect, the tension/trials too easily overcome? I'd argue that it doesn't matter in this book, because it's really about being immersed in the writing, and the message the story sends that's of importance here. Its parallels to our current world issues, with references to many historical events throughout, reminds us that it only takes one voice to stoke the fires of change, something we can all be reminded of.

Also, I loved that the author included those historical references/stories based on at the end of her book.
