Wow! This book was fantastic! I am a huge Jodi Picoult fan, and in true Picoult style she knocks it out of the park. The story tells about World War II and the holocaust in a unique fashion that kept me engaged and made me just want to keep reading more and more. Although the book is 468 pages, you would never know it by how fast the story flows. The book had me on the verge of tears a couple different times, and very surprised by the ending. This one is a must read, and I highly recommend it.

“What he did was wrong. He doesn’t deserve your love. But he does deserve your forgiveness, because otherwise he will grow like a weed in your heart until it’s choked and overrun. The only person who suffers, when you squirrel away all that hate, is you.”

First 5 ⭐️ of 2024! Also my first Jodi Picoult book. Okay Jodi, I see you.

I struggled a little with the rating because I feel like the sections set in the past were incredibly gripping and moving, but sometimes the sections in present-day felt a bit more clunky. All in all, an excellent and emotional read.

This book started slow for me. I kept putting it down as much as I wanted to read it. It wasn’t until Josef shared his secret with Sage. At that point I count out the book down and was captivated.

The was my first ever Jodi Picoult book. I know a ton of people who rave about her, including two of my roommates, but I was a little underwhelmed from all of the hype I was hearing. There were parts I was really into, and then parts not so much. Ironically enough I found Mila's story to be the most boring out of all of them, and hers was the most important one I guess. I sometimes struggled to get through that big middle section not because of the subject matter, but because it was dull.

It was also really predictable, apparently she is notorious for her twists... I saw it coming from a mile away. Ms. Picoult did a good job with creating imagery, for most of the book I was craving fresh bake breads, particularly that chocolate cinnamon roll. I did like Sage's story with Josef. I would give it a 3.5 rounded up to a 4. It just kind of lagged.
