Won this in a storygraph giveaway. I really, really liked it. Without going into spoilers, the way each character feels and shows their emotions in such a different way was masterful. The choices they have to make, the misunderstandings and moments where they are resolved -I loved it. I felt it all in a very viceral way, especially at the end. I guess be warned that this is a rather dark book before diving in.
Jonah quickly became my favorite character. You slowly learn about his past, what made him who he is now and it was gutwrenching to read how he struggled talking to his son. How he was trying and being shot down, trying to find his mistake. And at the same time, having Row's pov meant that we also understood exactly why the son was shooting him down. The part that hurt the most to me, was at the end, when he sees his ex-wife again and then the scene when Cora goes to see him -like that divide between him hidding his feelings, waiting until he's outside the bar and alone to finally collapse and cry, as in him being unable to be vulnerable before his ex-wife; and the moment he cries and exists next to Cora. This just resonated so damn much with me.

Not a bad story, but I just couldn't connect. Nearly halfway through the YA hero was still too grating for my tastes.

Rogue is so much more than a unique and creative exploration of the science fiction tropes of intergalactic travel, and discovering the true origins of humanity. It's a book about the strained relationship between a father and his son, and how he battles between being brutally honest about their dire circumstance or lying in order to give his son, and others, hope for their survival. Many of the main protagonists are very fleshed-out, with good and bad traits that contribute to the story's progression.
