Some really interesting essays that make you think. I especially enjoyed the one about gender and women in art and the difference between naked and nude and I often found myself closing the book for a minute to let the sentence really sink in.

Dear Matija,
this is now one of my favorite pieces of media along the documentary after which this book was written. I will reread it many times, and I hope I will get my own copy one day. My favorite essay was about how women are perceived and how we perceive ourselves in our everyday life, when we pass a reflective surface or cry in public. It is wonderful to read such a positive and progressive read from the seventies. I would love to read and see more of his work. I encourage you to watch the show and to look at things in more than one way!

A fascinating book that I should have read years ago.
That said, I shall be tracking down the TV series that the book is based on. The ideas contained within the book are insightful, useful, and thoughtful - but I'm pretty sure that the original series did a far better job of conveying the core ideas of each essay.
The very poor b/w illustrations and the clumsily amateur type setting seem designed specifically to make the book hard to read (layouts, font, leading & kerning all ignore hundreds of years of testing and learning). I assume that this is an intentional device, perhaps to make the reader concentrate more. I found this rather obvious device annoying.

So clearly and succinctly written, even with its unique insights. I love how John Berger writes just as much as how he sees art. I will definitely continue to read more of his work.
