It was a joy to watch the evolution of this story from a bare outline to the lovely novel it is. I was privileged to have opportunity to read in it's beta form and have just completed reading the final product. It's an emotional journey of two men, dealing with the aftermath of trauma. There is lots of emotion - love, anger, hurt, sorrow, frustration - and finally finding a way back together. It was refreshing to read a story about an established couple and to see couples dealing with real-life issues concerning communication and life-altering mental health issues. And it was satisfying to see them work through the issues - eventually - to come back together with a deeper understanding of each other.
3.5*
This is one of those books where I loved the theme but just didn't click with the writing style - which given the subject of the book meant I wasn't as big an emotional mess as I could have been.
Then, when Jake moved out it seemed like he'd turned into Mr Neurotic so I was much more in Cam's corner - he was getting help eventually, he wanted to communicate, Jake seemed to take umbrage at the slightest thing.
Lots of downs, up, downs, crying, downs, crying etc - but I just didn't get into it all as much as I should have or could have - and it was still traumatic at that! The story was told from (well noted) alternating first person views which normally dont bother me but maybe that 'telling' style that comes from first person kept my out of the story a bit (and probably saved my sanity as well as my tissues!)
So, enjoyed it, lots of hurt comfort.

For most of the book I was in Jake's corner - thought he was very patient, gave Cam lots of time and space, didn't tell him to sort himself out etc like I wanted too! Then, when Jake moved out it seemed like he'd turned into Mr Neurotic so I was much more in Cam's corner - he was getting help eventually, he wanted to communicate, Jake seemed to take umbrage at the slightest thing.

while this book does end with an HEA, it was extremely painful to get there. there was so much hurt and pain through most of the book i was pretty depressed through most of it. the damage to the relationship cyclical and lasted a lot longer than necessary. if cam truly couldn't live without jake, he should have gotten help sooner. actually, there were a lot of should haves in this story.
their love story is one for the ages and there were moments of love and sweetness. those moments make the bad times in the book that much more painful.
the writing was good. the character development was good. the setup for book 2, while predictable, was good.

New to me author. This story is a mm contemporary about a couple that have been together nine years. Love is not simple, but true love finds the way. I look forward to reading more from RJ Jones
