Of all the fantasies I’ve ever read, this is the first based in Norse mythology that I’ve tried out, and I’m so glad I did! Right from the first chapter, Freya’s strength and wit had me rooting for her character. Throughout the book, the way she is at war with herself, caught between what’s best for her, her family, and her nation, was a very relatable conflict.
The chemistry between Freya and Bjorn was on fire (literally!) from the beginning and I loved watching their relationship develop despite all the obstacles in their way.
The world building was excellent, the intrigue at just the right level, and the twist(s) at the end were revealed perfectly. I cannot wait for the next in this series!

Freya is stuck in an abusive marriage to keep her loved ones safe until she meets Bjorn, a handsome son of a neighboring jarl, and in a wild twist of fate she murders her husband and reveals her secret: she is a daughter of Hiln and gifted the ability to protect herself by invoking the obscure goddesses name. What follows is a wirl-wind adventure and slow- burn romance as Freya grows into her powers and fights her fate as she fights for the people she cares about.
Cannot wait for the sequel to find out how Freya's journey ends!

Holy cow! What a ride! I can say I have never read a book that was steeped so heavily in mythology but this book made it very easily digestible, explaining in small tidbits so the world building didn't feel overwhelming.
Freya is constantly used as a tool for her family. She is told to never be too loud, never be to opinionated, never be more, only do what is expected of her and not what she wants. I feel like this makes her a very relatable character, having been in her position of being told to do for the greater good rather than good of yourself. She's traded from one shitty husband to another to build their greatness and once again is used as a tool while she battles with what it means to be who she wants to be versus what is expected of her.
Danielle gives details that make you feel, hear and smell the world around Freya. Her horrors, her joys, her surroundings are yours while you're reading this book. Danielle gives you ample time to warm up to the idea of a love interest in this book and it gave me all the feels when it played out. He pushes her again and again to be her best self, to not rely on only one strength and to choose herself over, even if it means dishing out some tough love. The dash of spice through out the middle and end of this book more than satisfied.
I absolutely devoured this book and am utterly wrecked about having to wait for the next book.

this book is dripping in classic norse mythology and i love it. the twists, the romance, the stakes, it was all just so fantastic. if you like insta-love turned slowburn, the romance in this is for you.
the only thing i didn’t like was that the main character freya was a bit aloof at times and made some *questionable* choices. made me want to shake her and say “think before you act woman”
i’m so glad i got to read it and i need the sequel like, now
