This was a re-read for me, from many years ago. I hadn't realized it until I was a couple of chapters in, then I just kept reading it. Good period mystery set in an interesting time of history, and with likable characters.
adventurous dark mysterious tense slow-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Complicated
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

A decent historical murder mystery set in Regency England. Our Hero, Sebastian St. Cyr, a veteran of the Napoleonic Wars, must solve the brutal murder of a young actress to clear his own name. A quick read, but a varied cast of wrongdoers, a trace of romance rekindled, hints at espionage, and plenty of historical details made it a good one as well.

I was disappointed with this first book in the Sebastian St. Cyr series. I was hoping this was another Anne Perry type mystery series. Instead, it was more of a romance novel combined with mystery. The murder/s were particularly gruesome though they are discussed after the fact. The actual murderer was somewhat of a surprise but only because the person was hardly part of the story. There were a few sex scenes though not very explicit. I probably should have DNF. There was also quite a bit of swearing. I'm not going to continue the series.

DID NOT FINISH: 35%

Overuse use of specific period terms (reticule, pelisse) interspersed with more modern language. Overall just doesn't grab me. I find the characters (except Tom and maybe Paul Gibson) pretty uninteresting.

This will be a fun series to follow! Audiobook read by Davina Porter whose mastery of British and European accents is unmatched.

solid historical mystery set in regency london, which is a nice change from the victorian-set stuff i have lately become accustomed. it's not entirely earth shattering (totally guessed the killer), but the details and characters are winning and i look forward to delving into the rest of the series.
