Great book, except for the burning bales of WOOL. That popped me out of the story for a moment and made me laugh when I probably shouldn't have. A small spark won't cause a bale of wool to go up in an inferno.
Promising series starter with the exact type of diversion I was looking for, including the offbeat and sarcastic unlikely investigator.
Sebastian St. Cyr does not seem at first glance like the kind of character I would care for, and yet the author makes him likable from the start. By the time thing get really going we've seen further glimpses of his complex character and root for him all the more.
This is a fairly dark story, filled with gritty details of poverty and a few wealthy characters who so lack compassion as to be completely inhuman. Perhaps that is part of what makes Sebastian shine the brighter.

Hmm, I'm not sure how I feel about this. I liked it enough to try another in the series. Or I liked the main character enough. But I didn't like the constant POV switches to random characters. And the constant xenophobia might be period appropriate, but unless it's necessary to the plot (and it isn't here) it mostly just reads like an excuse for the author to be gross about "foreigners." And in general, the treatment of women and queers wasn't great here, either. Like we get how hideous the initial murder was, but yes, please repeatedly describe the poor women's violation and the state of her body over and over like it's somehow necessary and not just an egregious excuse to continue to violate the character on page.
