What Angels Fear

Ok. I felt the author used a sort of MacGuffin to resolve the plot. I will try the next in the series to see if it is better.

3.5 ... Wasn't great but wasn't bad either. Kinda flat ... But I still needed to know the ending ... I'll give this series one more try ...

My intruduction to the genre.

I've heard a lot of praises for this series, and finally decided to jump in. I currently have only the first two books, but already I think I'll pick up the rest.

It was really well written, engaging and entertaining (albeit rather grim and gruesome at times) murder mystery story set in Regency era. The main hero, Sebastian, might seem a little bit too perfect - a sort of Sherlock Holmes meets Batman kind of deal - but his personality and abilities are not so in your face, that they become annoying.

While getting more and more in to the story, especially when an old flame of Sebastian came in to the play, the whole set up reminded me of the Noir hardboiled detective books.

I enjoyed this one, and I'm looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

4+/5 stars

It was a little on the gruesome side for my tastes, and I'm not keen on a story that's really about a man running so thoroughly on violence against women. Still, it was well written, and if not for those things, I'd probably have given it a 3 star. I might try the others in the series.

A really solidly entertaining historical mystery. The characters are believable and relatable, the setting is well-rendered, and the mystery was well-plotted and surprising. Feels a bit like someone set out to take the place of the Julian Kestrel novels after their author's death, but that's not a bad thing at all.

thoroughly enjoyable. i'm finding that the historical mystery is a new favorite, though i tend to lose interest when the historical focus is political intrigue, as was the case here. i too often found myself asking "who's this guy again?" "what does he know about whom and how does it affect the government of which country?", etc. but i'm willing to overlook this in light of her excellent descriptions of the period and the well-written dialogue of the characters.

_marit_'s review against another edition

DID NOT FINISH: 15%

I have been patiently awaiting this book for weeks but sadly didn't click with it.

This book started out pretty well. There was action and this wasn't a bunch of infodump chapters! But then it got boring around halfway through. I don't know what it was exactly. It seemed to be a bunch of running around. And I could be wrong, but I think the climax takes place in the same spot the climax of The Tea Rose does. So bad feelings there. I don't really count that against this book, just pointing it out.

This is just really not my genre.
