You know when you read a book, and get so invested in the book and the characters, that sometimes you just want to scream at them? That’s how I felt! This book was very easy for me to dive into and become invested in. Each time Josie chickened out telling Caleb the truth about her family, I wanted to yell at her. And every time Poppy Parnell showed up at the family’s doorstep (while they were grieving the loss of Josie and Lanies’ mom), just to get a quote for her podcast, I wanted to shut the door in her face! I felt bad for Lanie, she was fighting some of the same symptoms her mom was having, and knew it, but just didn’t know what to do.
I did think the book was predictable. I prefer this genre of novels to have twists and turns I don’t see coming, but this book just didn’t have that for me.

A satisfying mystery/thriller, but one that could have used one more shocking twist at the end.

An investigative reporter named Poppy Parnell is looking into the murder of Chuck Buhrman in her podcast Reconsidered and how reopening interest into this closed case affects his surviving family. The story is mostly told from the perspective of one of Chuck’s identical twin daughters, Josie, with interspersed excerpts from the podcast and social media redactions to the podcast. I really enjoyed the format, especially as an audiobook because I felt as though I was listening to the podcast myself.

Who done it. Immersive podcast/social media inserts. I felt the ending was kind of underwhelming and hinted at, however one of my favorite endings that I would have for this story. The timelines may be confusing but nothing too distracting. 4/5⭐️
I couldn't put this book down! A very good read, although I was able to predict the ending pretty easily. I still enjoyed the ride, though! I love the way Barber writes. I will definitely be reading more by her.
"I have to be honest, Brother Earnest's words disturbed me. But after many hours of reflection, I have come to the conclusion that I don't think this podcast is to blame. At all."
I have to admit - I love missing people podcasts. I listen to quite a few and I listen often. But the family are always involved, always pushing - always trying to find their loved ones.
Serial. I listened to one....maybe two. Then I searched the original case, read the briefs and closing statements by the Prosecution and I felt sick. Sick that the family of the daughter had to go through this all over again while a nation listened to them dig through the sordid details and held their breath and passed judgement.
So I'm glad this book paints this podcast and Penny as ruthless and ugly - and awful. I love that the guilt and the blame is tangled and it feels dirty - because it's should.
The other story - about the more current stuff and the sisters and the mother and their dramas - I found it interesting but I didn't love it. The ultimate outcome was interesting and I liked how all the pieces fit together. This is really a 2 star read for me but I gave another star just for making the podcast feel gross - because it was.

The podcast aspect is a little campy but it worked. I thought the book was very enticing, hard to put down.
