If you're looking for a story that's like the movie then this might be your book. If you're looking for a story that's EXACTLY like the movie, you're not going to get it. I personally think that the book is better than the movie. Characters that are quickly introduced and then forgotten about in the film are more detail and contribute to the plot in the book. The book is more detailed than the movie is, it seems as if the book is a lot more brutal than the movie.
An amazing, fast paced read. I liked Puzo's insight into the structure of The Family and the role of the Godfather. It was fascinating to consider the contradictions in the character and the actions of Don Corleone and to read the Family's justification of their actions - often perceived as 'necessary' and 'just'.

Engaging writing - cursing - killing - scheming. Finally allowed to watch the movie now ;) HOWEVER- not perfect. Racist but only a little and in ways that I find believable. Misogynistic in the doublespeak doublethink that is employed all throughout the story - women are saints, men are in charge. Pregnant ladies get slapped around. Some chapters, chiefly the medical ones, seem a little out of place. I'm not a gynecological surgeon but it felt like I sat thru a sales pitch.
The actual Mafia stuff tho? That was great. Worth reading for the Don's backstory alone imo.
