I've never read this before, but enjoyed the movie a long time ago. Really great story. Well written with some particularly excellent sequences. Excellent character writing obviously.
But definitely slow in sections.

I found the ending most interesting, and its focus on Kay. It showed us that it was not just the position of godfather that had been passed on, but also the position of the godfather's wife. Kay was stepping into the shoes of mama Corleone by becoming catholic and going to church everyday. It is interesting that in some ways catholicism might be compatible for the family of the godfather because there is space for confession and being washed clean of your sins. It is her role now, which only became clear to her after fully understanding and accepting who her husband now is, to pray for his soul. I found that a very interesting and powerful ending.
Good read :)Very close to the movie! My review: http://obsessivebookworm.wordpress.com/2012/08/04/book-review-the-godfather/

This month marked the fiftieth anniversary of this book's publication so I just had to finally read it. And it was incredible. You basically get to read about the succession of the Corleone Family Don and I found myself thinking about the book constantly when I wasn't actively reading it.
Not sure why I waited so long to read this -- it's a cultural icon. Very, very good. Some actions that would have been surprising were less so, but only because some motifs were so well known. I listened to this one, but think reading it for myself would have been clearer - especially with the time jumps.
This book is not the masterpiece that the movie is, but all the scenes and dialogue are there. There is a little more subplot with the singer Fontaine, but it’s completely understandable why it didn’t make the movie cut. A quick read.

Enjoyed this book for a second time. Well read on audiobook by Joe Montagna (who i believe was in The Godfather 3). Pretty much has the plot of the first movie and much of part two (in slightly different order) but just shows how close the movies follow the book. Sometimes went off course with elements of the story that really didn’t need that much detail and there were some chapters I found myself asking ‘why is this even here’ otherwise extremely entertaining.
