As always LJ Shen is bringing bad boys to their knees. I think every book I have read by her makes me love her even more. It’s a fast read that keeps you wanting more and more.
the only lj Shen book I've read.

i do not like romance books that much so the fact that I enjoyed this book is a surprise to everyone including myself. this book follows a girl named Daria who is a classic rich girl that has her first kiss "stolen" by a boy named penn. Daria was the reason penn's sister runs away, and penn ends up planning his revenge on Daria. this book is twisted in so many ways, and it was so fun.
this review will probably be short. oops! Daria is such a flawed character. she is kind of a b****. she treats her family very badly, she is having a relationship with the principal, she hates her friends and she seems to push everyone away. until penn comes, she is attracted to him, and she has a link to him. I liked her growth in this book. she has her journal where she is writing her feelings, and she has done a lot of bad things, but she really started to become happy and want to heal with penn. when via comes to live with her family, she isn't having the easiest time. once she gets closer to penn and starts to fall for him, she begins to realize her relationship with the principal wasn't healthy. even though they never had sex, he was taking advantage of her. she realizes that she has always cared about herself and is scared of not being good enough. she loses her friends but she doesn't treat them as they deserve. she moves away near the end so she is able to start fresh and became a better person. she realizes she needs to be nicer to people and that people care about her. her parents cared about her and let her "hulk out" but didn't keep trying to force them to let her in. her mom and dad's POV were some of my favorite because her mom talks about how she should have broken down the walls and been there for her, so she wouldn't have looked for comfort in her abusive principal. her father literally went to the principal's house with his friends and beat the dude up. jaime go off!! Daria was great and even if she was unlikable, she was real.
penn. a sweetheart. the twist of him protecting Adrianna and saying how he was the father when in reality, she was raped by his stepdad was great. who would take that responsibility as a teenager and be a parent for a child not even his. he had no obligation to help, but he did anyway. his love for Daria was precious, and I loved how they balanced each other out. his football team at his old high school was his life. he finds out his team threw the first game of the season because Gus paid them $50o dollars eac,h and then, Gus tried to blackmail penn for the state championship because he had Daria's journal where she wrote her secrets and threaten to expose her bc via gave it to him.
I liked the scene where they all revealed their secrets. cheesy. but I liked how Esme talked about her insecurity of her weight. knight admits he has a big dick which is exactly something he would say (what a man threw the state title game like can't wait for his book my bby). everyone finds out Gus is actually poor and reveals he has always been jealous of penn's football ability. penn says how he was cursed with having holes in his shirts. as a kid, he fell and his shirt got caught on a branch, which teared his shirt. his heart will be broken until he finds "the one." he will wear holes to symbolize what he doesn't have until he finds love. it would be a girl who could become a Scully but assumed it was "Skull Eyes" which is the nickname penn has had for Daria since he met her. beautiful. we also confirm that she had been living in south bend, Indiana waiting for penn to come to Notre dame which was predicted but still amazing to read. I thought the epilogue was cute especially the proposal.
overall sweet book and if you are not a fan of romance like me, this is a keeper.

i’m sorry everyone loves this book and author but i was so annoyed by it. i couldn’t connect to any of the characters, they were so melodramatic, the story and plot were also super dramatic. the writing and story were nothing special, i was bored for most it. big disappointment.
I have to agree, I took a really long time to get adjusted to the story. It all started with a lot of toxicity, jealousy, vengeance, and just straight out bitchiness.
I kept reading, since I find it super hard to dnf a book. And I just couldn't give up on it yet. And guess what? It turned out amazing.
Fyi, all those negative traits I've spoken above? Yeah well... That's our heroine Daria Followhill, summarized. The story follows her through her journey of some real character development alongside falling in love with a guy who at first is hell-bent on ruining her life.
Penn Scully is everything that she's not. Comes from the "wrong side of the track", highly dysfunctional family, abusive stepdad, a drug addict for a mom, and a ballerina sister who just happens to have it out for Daria— the girl he's had his eyes for quite a while, at age 14. That is, until she ruins him. Now all that he's got to do with her, is returning the favor by ruining her.
The story begins with a lot of hatred and deals with a lot of flaws and insecurities. Through all this, the two leads find each other and love each other in a way that's surprisingly twisted. So many loyal betrayals, making the wrong choices, sacrifices, and more they still find their way to each other. And by the time we reach the happily ever after, it would be pretty obvious just how much each of these characters (Daria, especially) would've grown, would've matured, would've become more compassionate, responsible and real. We'd follow them as they deal with their flaws and insecurities and accept them for who they are, eventually deciding to do better. A little, every day. Do as better as they can.
My request is, if the book feels frustrating, pls don't give up. Almost all the characters in this book have got their own story which would eventually be revealed. Maybe then one could understand that people are who they are because of what happened to them. Only the courageous can strive through all those BS and still come out as good. But our dear Daria just so happens to find it it so damn hard, fails more often than not and gets sidetracked before eventually finding her way to self-discovery and goodness.
-I really love Daria's dad. Jaime's like, super cool.
-I felt really bad for Via for a really long time. And even after she turns out to be as vicious as Daria once was. Coz, I still feel a little sorry for Via, because at the end of the day, when things got rough Daria still got to go to a nice place to do some self-discovery, but in Via's case (4 years ago) she just got shoved into more abuse when she ran away to live with her dad. They were both equally vicious, and if one can be excused and forgiven then the other should be as well.
-It also doesn't go unnoticed that Penn was metaphorically dying when Daria ran away and did all that he could to get her back, while when Via ran away, he didn't (or maybe couldn't, given he was in a worse position— I'm not judging him, just pointing out a fact) do much. Also let's not forget that (at the risk of sounding repetitive, here we go) Daria still went to a better place when she ran away and it wasn't like she didn't have any other choice and she also had her family's support, but the place that Via ran away to was worse and she had no one supporting her or no one who cared enough about her.
-Regardless, I'm still team Daria. Coz she does a better job at character development. A much, much better job.
-I only feel sorry for Melody. She was struggling and she didn't know what to do. She tried her best and thought what she did was right only to later realize that she was doing it all wrong. We can all forgive and accept her, if we can accept Daria.
-Penn is truly a nice guy. He still accepted Daria, even after knowing what she did to Via. He still accepted Via, even after what she did to him and Daria (or at least he worked towards accepting her). He supported Adrianna and Harper, eventhough it wasn't his responsibility.
-I already love Knight and Vaughn. Knight, especially. He plays super fair.
-I adored those moments between Penn and Jaime. Also those moments between Penn and Jaime's friends.
-I again have to give it to Penn. No matter how things started out, he still saw Daria for who she was and was there for her and tried to understand her when no one else did. He challenged her and her sanity, in an attempt to keep her sane. And that's appreciated, in a really twisted way. He never judged her. And I can't blame him much for having a moment of weakness and choosing his equally toxic sister's side over Daria's. We all make mistakes. Fact is, he realizes it and makes up for it without just leaving it at "I'm sorry".
-I also love how Daria was loyal towards Penn. Despite all her issues and idiocy, she continued to be loyal to him and loved him through and through.
-Principal Prichard had it coming.
-Daria can be quite amusing.
-Penn is straight out hilarious.
-Shipping Penn and Daria all the way. Coz at the end of the day, with all their imperfections, they're just perfect for each other.
“Please, for the love of G…Marx, put me out of my fucking misery and tell me you’ll be my wife. I’m not asking you to make the commitment this year. Or next year. Or maybe not even the next one. I’m asking you to make the commitment to make the commitment, and yes, I know how Dr. Phil that sounds.”
