Mean girls, dysfunctional families and reinventing oneself.

I waited impatiently for this book but holy moly was it worth it. Daria is complicated and broken, vindictive and spiteful but that's only what she lets people see.Underneath her snarky exterior she is hurting and only let's herself be seen clearly by Penn. Penn Scully is from the wrong side of the tracks but has talent and needs Daria to make him whole.
This book is fast paced, full of action and had me sucked right in from the start. The original Hotholes feature and most of the next generation so it's definitely up there with my favorite books.

Now a days it seems like everyone is using the word AMAZING to describe things they love. But for this book review, I mean it, this book was AMAZING.

I started it a few months ago and stopped reading. Not that it wasn't good (BECAUSE IT WAS), but a newer released book would pique my interest and I'd start reading it. This time around though, I developed Covid and was stuck in my apartment for 5 days straight. So I decided to pick it up again. Also, I was in a bit of a reading slump. But this got my mind juices flowing again.

Before anyone says anything, I am well aware L.J had a whole universe for the characters. Believe me I am headed to read them now. But I'm late to this author's work and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Daria Followhill and Penn Scully have not seen each other in years. You see, 4 years ago, a young boy asked a young girl, outside a ballet studio, to save all their Firsts for him. But things can change over several years. After some unexpected tragedies, Penn moved into Daria's home. But he's not over what she did to him those years ago and he's made it his mission to make her pay.

What can I say about these characters? Let's start with Daria. Daria's journey started out a bit rough. Feeling not good enough to her mother, due to her lack of talent as a ballerina, she grew up distancing herself from the relative. Instead of mom, she called her Melody. Daria became the Queen B of her high school. No one messed with her. She started out a bit shallow, in my opinion. Judging others, keeping a journal of her confessions and observations. But then as the novel progressed, her walls began to crumble. Especially when it came to a certain Las Juntas High wide receiver. A rival to her school.

Which bring me to that hot wide receiver, Penn Scully. This boy went through it all. From a death in his family to a missing sister, it seemed he never could catch a break. My heart went out to him many times, even through the questionable things he did. When no one else saw him, I could see his barriers crumbling to the ground.

But put Daria and Penn together and you got volcanic eruptions just waiting to ignite.

Each chapter ends with a bang, leading you to want to read more. There were many nights I stayed up well into the wee hours, sacrificing my sleep to know what happens next.

The only negative thing I truly have to say about this book is it felt a little too Regina George and Mean Girls to me at times. But even that really didn't bother me too much. So please don't let that sway you away from this book.
